museum schaffen – under construction

Project completed
Museums & the Public

Work – a subject that concerns us all. And a topic that the Winterthur Historical Association is realigning its city museum around, as the museum schaffen or museum of work.

In collaboration with the Migros Pioneer Fund, the two-year pilot phase of museum schaffen – under construction will focus on the development of new, contemporary formats for communicating history. The public will be given an active role in this: the history of Winterthur will be made tangible through personal biographies, and by involving the visitors they will be able to experience it for themselves. The setting for museum schaffen – under construction is an industrial warehouse, which itself wrote labour history, on a former industrial site, the Sulzer Areal. It will now form a temporary stage for the activities and exhibitions. Insights gained from this process will be shared openly, so that exhibition designers and museum specialists can discuss, apply and develop the approach further.

The long-term goal of museum schaffen is to establish a work-themed centre of expertise and communication.
